2,700-year-old marijuana found in Chinese tomb

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Duuude:

The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly “cultivated for psychoactive purposes,” rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

PSA: Godwin’s law

Monday, April 21st, 2008

As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.

Attributed to Mike Godwin, originally referencing the Usenet, now generally applied to any internet forum. (wikipedia)

In layman’s terms, the longer a thread is, the more likely someone will compare their opponent to Hitler. It is an association fallacy or ‘guilt by association’. Making the comparison typically reduces the discussion to other colorful comparisons, often ending in name calling and questioning of sexual preference.

For a contemporary example of Godwins Law see Ben Stein’s movie, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed. (For a rational rebuttal, kindly direct your attention to Richard Dawkins.)
