Migrating from Xen-Fedora to KVM-Ubuntu

Recently I completed my migration from Xen / Fedora Core to KVM / Ubuntu. I have been a long time Redhat user, but I felt that Fedora was no longer stable enough for me. I was tempted to move to CENTOS but it didn’t feel right, not quite an ‘official’ Redhat release. So I decided on Ubuntu with KVM virtualization.

The transition was reasonably painless, a few adjustments to make, like using init.d instead of service. I made some notes for myself that others might find helpful:

Some administrivia updates, I have been busy behind the scenes.

A slight change to the server settings, ‘wordpress’ is no longer part of the blog.gordonturner.ca url. This will cause some indigestion until I can get the rewrite code working correctly. When I do, old links will transparently be redirected to the new url.

Also, there are three new subdomains: jira.gordonturner.ca, confluence.gordonturner.ca and bamboo.gordonturner.ca. Confluence will be the new home of the Pix and Greenfrog projects, Jira will capture all bugs and feature requests and Bamboo is a continuous integration server.

Until I have sorted out some httpd.conf settings, some links like to the maven and maven2 repos will be broken.

I had to go back and fix some of the old picture links, the urls had changed with the new release of Pix 1.8.

Sorry about the recent downtime, it was a result of Rogers changing their dhcp settings and the fact that the date on my firewall was off by a day(!).

I hadn’t noticed that the date was a problem, but the shorter dhcp leases highlighted the issue.

On the upside, I can add an rdate to my greenfrog create scripts to avoid this in the future

As most (all?) of the current traffic to this blog are friends and family, just be aware this isn’t quite setup perfectly.

The registration seems to be broken at the moment. I will be fixing that tonight I hope. In the mean time drop me a line and I can add and account for you.

The default theme is, well, default and not particularly attractive. That will be fixed in the next few weeks.
