CNC router + Internet = Profit?

Friday, June 8th, 2007

One morning, in a highly caffeinated state, I had a Wouldn’t it be Neat if (WibNi) moment…

Wouldn’t it be Neat if someone took a CNC router and used it to make flat pack furniture?

Then to really get things going, setup these in home centers where people could buy plywood and get it routered on site? Then too really, REALLY, get things going, setup a website to collaborate on router/flat pack designs that anyone can use.

Then a customer could upload the design to the machine, pay for the plywood (and any required hardware) and pay for the time on the router.

Turns out that someone has (kinda) started down this path. Because We Can has used their CNC router to create a coffee table that could be made from just ply wood (although they have a plastic top).

Sometimes simple solutions are best, but not always obvious.
